Structure and principle of dry-type transformer

Nov 08,2025

The core conclusion: Drytype transformers use air as insulation and cooling medium, with a structure consisting of core, winding, enclosure and accessories, and operate based on electromagnetic induction to convert voltage.

  Basic Structure

Magnetic core: Made of coldrolled silicon steel sheets stacked, reducing eddy current and hysteresis losses. It provides a closed magnetic circuit for magnetic flux.

Winding: The key conductive part, usually made of copper or aluminum wire. It is divided into highvoltage and lowvoltage windings, with insulation treatment to ensure electrical safety.

Enclosure: Plays a protective role, preventing dust, moisture and external impacts. It also facilitates heat dissipation and maintains ventilation.

Accessories: Includes temperature monitoring devices, pressure relief valves, and terminals. These accessories ensure stable operation and easy maintenance.

  Operating Principle

Rely on electromagnetic induction. When alternating current passes through the primary (highvoltage) winding, it generates an alternating magnetic flux in the core.

The alternating magnetic flux cuts the secondary (lowvoltage) winding, inducing an electromotive force in the secondary winding.

The voltage ratio of the primary and secondary windings is proportional to their turns ratio, thereby achieving voltage conversion (stepping up or stepping down).

Since there is no insulating oil, heat is dissipated through natural convection or forced air cooling, ensuring safe operation in dry environments.
